FedEx Security Measures for Shipping over the Counter

FedEx Express places the highest priority on the safety and security of our customers, employees and your shipments.

We would like to inform you that as part of FedEx security measures we ask that you present valid identification, such as your passport, national identity card or driverfs license at our shipping counter. The details of your identification and your contact details will be kept confidential in compliance with the Japanese Personal Information Protection Act.

Questions and Answers

Why does FedEx Express require that I show my ID to send a package?
Under the new security program issued by the Ministry of Land Infrastructure and Transport, we are required to take additional security measures. One of these measures is to ensure that the transportation companies and the intended recipient of any package or document is aware of who the sender is. To comply with this measure we request you to show us your identification.

What kinds of documents are authorized as valid ID?
The following list shows the documents which are accepted as valid forms of ID at FedEx shipping counters (documents must be currently valid):

Passport / Driver's License / Health Insurance Certificate / Alien Registration Card / Student ID / Utility Bills (gas, electricity, water service, unpaid NHK subscription bill) / Tax Identification Document / Certificate of Residence

If you do not possess any of the above, any combination of two IDs listed below will be accepted as valid ID.

Company ID without Photograph / Credit Card / Bank Cash Card / Bank Book / Business Card / Personal Seal / Company Document with Full Name Printed

If none of the above identification documents are available, we may:
  • call a verifiable location (office, etc) for identification with your permission
  • approve other reasonable ID not listed on above list (please ask FedEx staff)

I may be sending the package on behalf of my company or someone else.
Do I still need to present my ID when I am not the actual sender?

Under these security arrangements the actual sender must give ID information in addition to any person who submits a package on behalf of the sender. Both the senderfs ID and your ID are required.

Will this added security measure assist in getting my package delivered on time?
This added security measure is as much for your safety and peace-of-mind as it is for us and the recipient of the package. If the relevant information about both the sender and recipient is uncertain or inappropriate, packages could be subject to delays for verification and checking.

How will my personal ID details be used?
Your ID will simply be recorded for the reference of FedEx, Customs authorities, and the recipient.

What if I am unable to present ID or do not wish to present my ID?
We are sorry, but under this security measure we will not be able to accept your package without your identification details.

FedEx Express places the highest priority on the safety and security of our customers and employees therefore we will be unable to accept your package without presentation of your ID.
